Burton in Lonsdale nestles  on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Burton has been called both "the first and last village in Yorkshire", tucked into the hillside above the River Greta, and at the cusp of the county boundaries of both Lancashire and Cumbria. The village has a church, a great community owned shop and until recently a pub - The Punch Bowl.

The Punch Bowl

The Punch Bowl has been welcoming locals and visitors since the 18th century and is the last pub in the village which was once home to 8 hostelries!. The current owners of the Punch Bowl, have decided to move on and as the pub is an asset of community value the community has an opportunity to purchase it.

What is Happening?

Two public meetings were held in February to gauge villagers interest in the possibility of the Punch Bowl becoming community owned. There was overwhelming support for transforming the Punch Bowl into a vibrant and thriving community hub.

Visits have taken place to learn from other rural community pubs in Cumbria and Yorkshire.  A bid is currently being developed, with the support from Plunkett UK, to be submitted to government community ownership fund, The deadline for submission is not yet known but likely to be sometime in April.

Support Us

If the bid is successful it will help toward the purchase of the Punch Bowl but it also needs to be backed by community funds.  A detailed community survey has been distributed to every household to find out what they would like to see from a community owned pub along with a pledge in principle to ascertain the level of community funding.  A share prospectus will be issued in due course.

If you would like to support us in making the Punch Bowl once again a vibrant and thriving community hub please subscribe below for updates, or to register an interest in share purchase when available. If you would like to complete a pledge in principle please complete our pledge in principle form. Thank You!
